Career Exploration

7th and 8th Grade students need to do a career lesson every quarter.

Create a PowerPoint Document. Save it is "1st last first Career Research"

Slide 1:
  • Career Research
  • Student Name

Slide 2 (select New Slide > Two Content) :
  • Title of Career (in top box)
  • Description of occupation:
  • Salary:
  • Education/Training:
  • Job Outlook:
On the right hand side have a picture representing the career

DUPLICATE SLIDE 2 FOUR MORE TIMES! (Right Click > Duplicate Slide)

Visit CareerTrekBC YouTube Channel (Teacher: be sure to show how to view by playlist cluster as well)

After creating slides for five different careers, reorder the slides with your favorite career on top.

NOTE: If the "Designer Pane" does not open up on the right hand side when students enter in their picture, select Home > Designer
Insert Animations to have your bullet points fly in one by one. Animations > Animation Group (select green animations)
Insert Transitions between slides to ensure a smooth and clear presentation. Transitions > Transition to This Slide Group

After students have selected 5 possible careers have them create a new slide and write:

In paragraph form I want you to answer the following question.

If I had to choose a career today, I would select ______________. There are three reasons why. First, ________________. Second, ________________. Finally, ________________________.

TEACHER NOTE: Students at the 8th grade level will continue this lesson from the previous year. They should "note" the slides they did their 7th grade year before continuing.  Students will add 5 more careers. Then they will re-arrange them from most likely to choose to least likely.
Some questions for students to ponder:
  • Did you find a new favorite career?
  • If you moved last year's favorite career down, how far did it "fall". What made you make this change?
